(1800-1836)
Major Robert Evans, born in Ireland, came to New York with his family. He then came to Texas as an adult by way of New Orleans. Evans served as ordnance chief under Col. James Neill, keeping the position when Travis took command of the Alamo. It was the Major’s responsibility to care for all the weapons and ammunition at the Alamo.
As a last attempt, Evens tried to blow up the remaining ammunition and gunpowder, but was shot down before he could achieve his goal.
Susannah Dickerson described him as being ’black-haired, blue-eyed, nearly six feet tall, and always merry’.
