(1808-1836)
Born in Scotland, John McGregor eventually took up residence in Nacogdoches. He became a second sergeant in Capt. Carey’s artillery company. In his part of the battle of Bexar, he was given 640 acres of land.
On February 28, 1836, McGregor and David Crockett entertained the men of the Alamo with a fandango. Crockett on fiddle and McGregor on bagpipes, each tried to outplay the other while at the same time boosting the morale of their weary compatriots.
McGregor, along with Crockett and 187 others, died valiantly in the final siege.
