Ana Salazar Esparza

(?-1847)

Though she did not fight in the battle, Ana Esparza did see what was happening at the Alamo on a day by day basis. She was married to a defender, Gregorio Esparza and they had four children. On the first day of the siege, she and the children followed her husband into the mission. She chose to stay with her husband rather than leave.

After the fateful battle, Ana and her children were brought to the Musquiz house in Bexar where she defied the guards and searched for food for her hungry children. Senor Musquiz finally gave food to all the women and children that had been brought to his house after the battle.

After three o’clock on the 6th of March, Ana was brought before Santa Anna, questioned then released. As the others were, she was given two silver dollars and a blanket for her efforts. She returned home only to sit and cry for many days. Ana Esparza died on December 12, 1847.
