George Washington Cottle

(1811-1836)

Born in Lincoln Co., Missouri, George Cottle was the son of Jonathan and Margaret Cottle. His family arrived at DeWitt's Colony in July of 1829. In 1830, George married his cousin, Eliza, and though they had a child, the marriage was annulled eleven months later. He married a second time to Nancy Curtis Oliver and they had twin boys born after the siege of the Alamo.

George Cottle fought in the battle for the Gonzales cannon in 1835. He served as a courier to get reinforcements to come to Gonzales. He arrived in San Antonio and the Alamo on March 1, 1836, with the relief force from Gonzales. His brother-in-law, Thomas J. Jackson, also fought and died at the final siege.
